People believe in chance, others consider it coincidence, but I strongly believe this expedition was predestined to me as a volunteer.
I am Clarence Alexander Barnes; graduated from the University of Ghana’s School of Engineering Sciences with a BSc degree in Computer Engineering. I found out about International Citizen Service (ICS) through a friend who is currently a volunteer and right away I knew I would love to be a part of the train.
My reason for volunteering with ICS-Challenges Worldwide could be deduced from Gandhi’s words;
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others”
It has always been my prayer to impact lives, and this was a great opportunity. The journey from the day of assessment to days of volunteering has been hectic, but the experience that we gain as volunteers is nothing words can ever explain. Some of the skills we acquire include good interpersonal relationship building, financial management, effective marketing and so on.
The name “Challenges Worldwide” is an indisputable proof of what it entails in its entirety. It has not been easy, especially for the volunteers who are experiencing culture shock. But our desire to complete the task ahead keeps us going.
We never forget all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
It is always nice to do something for yourself to make your life better, but ask yourself what you have done for others to make their lives better too. It is always great to give back to society by providing a helping hand. Is anybody out there still wondering who volunteers are? We are love in motion.
